The foundation handed over several houses and distributed a stock of dry foods and stationeries to people in a remote village called Elapathgama in Anuradhapura district which was built by the foundation under the guidance of Sobhitha Thera.
The housing project was funded by the Government of India while the Founder of Mahakaruna Foundation in Singapore most venerable Alawwe Gunarathana Nayake Thera sponsored for dry foods, stationeries for school children and lunch for villagers in that particular day.
The next aim of the Weera Foundation is to take steps to promote self-employment and develop the agriculture to uplift the living standards of the people of Elapathgama village.
School:
Malasna Devaraja Vidyalaya is a remote, primary school, situated in Wariyapola Education division in Nikaweratiya education zone.
Families:
There are 46 pupils who belong to 44 families. 95% of the families are low income families. In addition to the usual learning-teaching process, the school also supports the parents in many ways to enhance their living standards, so that the level of education too could be improved. The project about distributing chicks is one such effort.
Overview:
Two chicks were given to the families who are willing. Hens started laying eggs in four months. Every day the families get two eggs so that each week they could sell and also use eggs at home.
objectives -
economic support for families - creating sensitive human beings by training them on animal welfare
Economic support for families
Parents say that they are really satisfied about the project as it has helped them a lot in their economy. One egg is 50 rupees and every day they get Rs. 100/=. Each week they get Rs. 700/= and the Rs. 2800/= -Rs.3000/= per month is a very good support for their economy. Parents say that the children save that income in a till and monthly they open it to cover some expenses, like buying stationary and the tuition fee (Though we do not recommend tuition classes).
Creating sensitive human beings by training them on animal welfare
The chicks should be given a coop where they can stay freely and happily. It is prohibited to put more than the given number of chicks. Also the owners of the chicks are kids, not the parents. So the main responsibility lies on the kids. Once in two months, the kids should bring one chick to school and talk about her; the things she eats, drinks, health, emotions etc. The families are not allowed to sell the hens at the end of their egg-laying period. They should look after the hens till they naturally die. The total financial support for the pilot project was given by International Weera Foundation. All the costs for buying chicks, transporting them, buying vitamins and medical treatments were covered by that money.
Next step:
The families who did not want to participate in the first round of the project are now very interested in starting as those who were in the first phase now share their success stories. So we are eagerly waiting for help to go on with the second step of the project
